What was the purpose of blue, pink purple hair rinses used by grandmas back in the 70's?

Do you recall actually seeing little old ladies with tinted hair in shades of blue, pink and purpley gray? Was that a style they were really trying to achieve or was this a mistake in hair coloring?

I worked in a hair salon a couple of years ago and I'll tell ya, little old ladies still get their hair colored light pink and purple. I never had the courage to ask them why they wanted it that color. I figured they would think I was being rude, but I always did wonder why they did it!!!
