Here are some reasons why many people prefer the Zoom H4N over other digital recorders.
The Zoom H4N is worlds apart from it's previous inferior models. H4N was brought out in response to the criticism they got for the H2 Model. Those earlier models were notorious for their weak, plastic construction and the noise issues.
The Zoom H4N, however, has a solid build with rubber coating which has resolved the sound problems. The screen is clearer and larger and the navigation buttons are bigger which makes the Zoom H4N easier to use. You can rotate the internal aluminium mics between 90 to 120 degrees giving you good coverage even 15 feet away from the music source.
The Pros of Zoom H4n
Zoom H4N gives all the features of other recorders for just half the price. This makes it ideal.
Here is a look at some of the most impressive aspects of the H4n.
1) 4 track recording which comprises the built in stereo condenser mic for 2 tracks and 2 external mic inputs for the other 2 tracks. You can therefore record a live band plus specific instruments like guitar or vocals which gives more artistic freedom in the mixing.
2) Multitasking, the other recording option, is another useful feature. It's like the 4 channel recording option except that you have 4 separate tracks which means you can vary the volume, panning and effects of each individual track. This is a valuable feature if you are a musician as you can layer the compositions.
3) The unit is also an audio interface when plugged into the computer with a USB cable.
4) The H4n works as a microphone and a headphone jack when connected to the computer. It can be used to make Skype calls or to record music or live audio feed with your laptop.
5) SD compatible memory card slot which is easy to use and cheaper than Sony memory sticks. Zoom H4n offers support for phantom power microphones plus you also get access to a low cut filter where you can choose from several frequencies.
When compared with some of its competitors, the sound quality offered by the H4n is very good. You can get more professional sound quality from other recording devices. The problem is they cost $100 to $150 more than the Zoom H4N and you only get a marginal improvement in sound. The H4n is priced at $300 which is fantastic considering all the features that are packed into the piece.
With its price and features, the H4n is suitable for a wide group of users including audio recordists who are on the look out for a cheap device that can power condenser mics which require phantom power.
The Cons Of The Zoom H4n
Zoom could have made the H4N even easier to use by having a separate track marker button. It's confusing as you have to press the record button twice to mark the tracks.
The SD slot could have been placed further away from the other features to avoid accidentally ejecting the card and losing your data. Just be careful when handling the features close to the SD slot.
Zoom H4N could have done with a provision to delete characters of file names but this is lacking. Also, the documentation for H4N is a poorly translated in to English..
Despite these minor oversights, the H4N is one of the best value and quality digital recorders on the market today. If you want to buy these portable digital recorders, I highly recommend you buy them through the Link below. You won’t find them cheaper anywhere else.
